Choosing A Sponsor
How To Choose a Sponsor
In preparation for Confirmation, you are required to choose a saint and a sponsor. The saint should be a person who you can aspire to be like in your journey to holiness. However, you were not alive when they lived. This being said, you were not able to witness how they dealt with everyday difficulties and situations. Therefore, it is important that you have another person who you can aspire to be like--a person who is alive and who witnesses an active Christian lifestyle to you. This is where choosing a sponsor comes into play.
Pray about who you desire to journey with you this Confirmation year. Choose someone who will challenge you to grow in your faith and who you look up to. They should be somebody who motivates you to be a holier person each and every day.
Requirements to Be a Sponsor
You may choose only one sponsor; it may be either a man or a woman. The sponsor needs to be a registered member of a Catholic parish that actively attends mass weekly and participates in the life of the Church, namely the Sacraments. They must:
a. Be 16 years old or older
b. Have received the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Holy Eucharist, and Confirmation
c. Not be a parent of the one to be confirmed
The following persons are not eligible to act as a sponsor:
1. Persons married outside the Catholic Church
2. Persons who habitually miss Sunday Mass
3. Those who give public scandal in any way
